The inspiration behind Sand Garden I
The pale oval stone stands apart from the undulating lines surrounding it. A compact form thus interrupts the repetition and offers a stable point from which to explore the rest of the composition. Sand Garden contrasts rounded stone forms with sandy-looking lines. It does not depict materials incorporated into the paper, but a visual arrangement in which the compact mass and repeated paths become more visible through contrast.

You can use a plain sand-coloured fabric and a small cream piece. Avoid undulating patterns directly beneath it so that the oval retains its contrast with the drawing's own lines.
